What’s the first thing that comes to your mind when you think of Egyptian makeup? It’s the eyes. Egyptian’s drew eyes in such a way that even today when we think of the best eye make up of ancient period, the Egyptian make-up comes to our mind. Behind their unique eye makeup, they had a holistic approach–on one hand it was very much ornate and on the other they considered that having lined the eyes with so much ingredients would definitely add to the health of eyes.
One basic type of eye makeup was known as Udju was obtained from a green copper ore, also called malachite. Mount Sinai, a sacred mountain for the Egyptians was a treasure trove of this mineral. All their green makeup came from the mountains of Sanai.
The other kind of eye makeup was done with ore of dark grey color. This was obtained from Lead. This was known as Mesdemet and was derived from lead sulfide and antimony sulfide. The area of Aswan and the Red Sea coast was rich in this mineral. This eye makeup was inspired from the Asiatic nomads.
Egyptians used to have different types of tails in their eye-makeup. Some pointed some flat-tapered . Not only that if you carefully look at their eye-brow, you will find that they are not like the way we wear them now. It’s of rectangular shape at the start and ends in a clear edge. This style was often said to be the Cat-eye Egyptian makeup or the Famous Cleopatra Makeup.
The process of making these eye makeup, was not simple rather it was a long and extensive. The egyptians used to take the dust of the ores and raw materials and mix it up with animal fat, to create the eye lining mixture and shadows. They used such animal fat that it would not fall of the eyes and stick on to the skin.
Eye makeup was not just the thing of the rich class, it was practiced by people of all class, from low rung to high class. Archeologists have also found makeup palettes, applicators and grinders in which they used to grind the ores from different sites in Egypt. So when it comes to makeup especially eye makeup , we can say women of ancient days were no exception. What do u say?
Do you want to give that drama to your eyes? You may use Kohl powder with an applicator to create the look. If you want then use some eye shadow too but use it before using the kohl.
